Architectural Walks in Wrzeszcz is a summer series of walks through selected neighborhoods in one of Gdańsk’s most interesting districts. During these walks, we’ll introduce you to Wrzeszcz’s most fascinating sites and their history. We’ll highlight the most significant architectural landmarks and share the stories of famous residents of Wrzeszcz. Nowe Szkody is a craftsmen’s settlement founded in the second half of the 16th century along the Strzyży Stream, centered around a mill that served as its focal point. It is a remarkable area located on the outskirts of Wrzeszcz. Although it is now primarily a residential neighborhood, it harbors a history of a mill and noble estates under Cistercian jurisdiction. Where did this place come from, and how did it function, having retained its distinct, rural character for so long?

Join us for a walk through the picturesque Jaśkowa Valley and the villas of Upper Wrzeszcz from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During the tour, we’ll take a closer look at the most interesting and beautiful buildings in this neighborhood. We’ll learn about the lives of the villas’ residents and the architects responsible for their design. It’s a journey through diverse architectural styles and countless unique details. After World War II, Wrzeszcz was supposed to become the city’s new center. By the 1990s, Grunwaldzka Street had become the most prestigious street in Gdańsk—it was here that people came to shop at Sezam, Powszechny Dom Towarowy, Puchatek, or Pewex. People spent their afternoons here in cafés such as Akwarium, Cristal, Kawiarnia Morska, the Ster club, Maleńka, and Pod Kominkiem. Join us for a walk along the trail of these places that no longer exist, discovering the people behind them, their stories, and the memories of Wrzeszcz’s past.

A walk along the Strzyża River trail is a unique opportunity to explore the natural landscape of Wrzeszcz and its history from the water’s perspective. The walk will take participants along both the hidden and open stretches of the Strzyża, showcasing its impact on the district’s development—from water mills to industrial buildings. Participants will learn how the river shaped the topography of Wrzeszcz and discover its role in Gdańsk’s hydrotechnical system. The route will cover both green park areas and urban sections of the river, showcasing its many facets.

Join us on a journey through the history of the allotment gardens established in the 1920s and 1930s. We’ll discuss the origins of each colony, as well as their evolution from recreational areas to residential spaces with their own infrastructure. Initially, they served mainly for recreation and gardening, but over time they became residential areas equipped with electrical and water systems. The walk illustrates how these green enclaves have become an integral part of Wrzeszcz’s urban development, while preserving the unique character of rural life in the heart of the city.

September 14, 10:00 a.m. | From the Nooks and Crannies of the University of Technology to the Mysteries of Szubieniczna Mountain | Hosted by Joanna Raftopulos
During our walk, we’ll explore the nooks and crannies and the majestic architecture of Gdańsk University of Technology, venturing into the campus’s lesser-known alleys and admiring the details of the Art Nouveau buildings. We’ll traverse the hills of Wrzeszcz, which offer a panoramic view of the district and where traces of stories from the past still linger. The highlight of the walk will be the Stary Sobieski Water Reservoir—a place steeped in history with a view that allows you to see Wrzeszcz from a completely different perspective.

Michał Ślubowski—historian, tour guide, creator of the Gedanarium website, and author of the books on the women of Gdańsk, *Witches, Townswomen, and Penitents* and *Supplicants, Celebrities, and Saints*
Kalina Krasowska—an archaeologist, assistant professor at the National Museum in Gdańsk, and an enthusiast of Gdańsk’s history and mini-excursions—completed the PTTK tour guide course for the Tri-City area.
Joanna Raftopulos—formerly associated with the Museum of World War II, the National Maritime Museum, and the Institute of Urban Culture; currently a tour guide and author of the book *Secrets of Wrzeszcz and Oliwa*.
