Philosophy Meeting on Women's Day

Philosophy Meeting on Women's Day - Fundacja Palma

The philosophical meetings initiated by the Palma Foundation are a series dedicated to the most important questions about humanity and the world. The starting point is philosophical texts—both classical and contemporary—which serve as the basis for shared reflection and discussion.

At each meeting, we read a selected text or an excerpt from it, and the facilitator introduces the topic and provides some background on the author. The meeting then takes the form of an open, informal discussion—we ask questions, debate, and exchange interpretations, learning to philosophize in practice about issues related to language, symbols, ethics, religion, and our relationship with authority. The meetings are open to anyone who wants to think more deeply—regardless of age, education, or prior experience with philosophy.

On International Women’s Day, we invite you to a discussion focused on reading excerpts from Judith Butler’s book *Gender Trouble*. Butler raises questions about the subject of feminism. Who is a woman? What are the characteristics that define a woman? Is the existing definition adequate and comprehensive? Butler attempts to convince us that redefining womanhood— the conscious construction of the subject of feminism, is the primary goal of feminist political practice—for is it possible to build just societies when the fundamental category is expressed through a system of repression that feminism seeks to combat?
