The “Dolarowiec,” also known as “Olimp,” was the tallest building in Wrzeszcz until 2011. It was designed by architect Romuald Kokoszko and architect Stanisław Michel. Its construction was already part of the concept for the Grunwald Residential District from the late 1940s. An exclusive skyscraper at the time of its opening, it is now one of the most iconic landmarks of the district and of Gdańsk. See how we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Dolarowiec.
December 31, 2019, marked the 50th anniversary of the building’s opening. To commemorate this milestone, we published a special edition newspaper featuring articles by Jarosław Wasielewski on the history of the place and by Szymon Kowalewski on the building’s architecture. The newspaper also featured residents’ memories, a report by Dawid Chrąchol, and archival photos by Zbigniew and Maciej Kosycarz. The newspaper was available at restaurants and cafes throughout Wrzeszcz. As part of the “50 Years of Dolarowiec” event, we also organized a collage workshop for children with Studio Psowron and a lecture by Szymon Kowalski on Dolarowiec.
On New Year’s Eve, we invited the residents of Dolarowiec and Wrzeszcz to join us in celebrating the building’s 50th anniversary. We sang “Happy Birthday” to mark its 50th birthday! Together with the residents, we lit up the symbolic number “50” in the windows of the high-rise building at exactly midnight on December 31, 2019, as we transitioned into January 1, 2020, welcoming the new year and the building’s next 50 years!
