Since 2017, we have been running the Langfuhr Institute—Understanding Wrzeszcz website, which introduces residents to the cultural and architectural richness of Wrzeszcz. The website documents residents’ oral histories, publishes historical articles and feature stories, as well as photo essays. The tremendous interest in the published content led us to expand the website in 2020 to include new sections: videos and a map of Wrzeszcz’s memories.
Wrzeszcz is one of the largest and oldest districts of Gdańsk. Its demographic makeup includes both people who have spent their entire lives here—witnessing the changes taking place—and newcomers from other cities and districts. Wrzeszcz is an important cultural, business, and social hub on the map of Gdańsk—its infrastructure is developing rapidly, and new initiatives are emerging. Above all, however, a new identity for this place is taking shape, rooted in its rich history but also in the vibrant urban life that has been transforming this part of the city for nearly a decade.
The Langfuhr Institute portal—Understanding Wrzeszcz—aims to systematically create and publish content. We introduce residents to the history of Wrzeszcz and publish interviews with local residents. The portal also aims to build social and civic bonds that foster a sense of regional and local identity. On the one hand, we want to reach the residents of Wrzeszcz and visitors to the area; on the other hand, we want to reach the residents of Gdańsk.
